Celebrating the Women of Durham Region on this International Women’s Day

When Jennifer Gaskell and I set out to establish the Durham Women’s Network in March of 2019, we had no idea that it would have grown to group of nearly 5,000 diverse women of all ages and backgrounds.

Since that time, we have hosted in person meet-ups, a day long retreat, DWN Chats, and a new podcast.

Earlier this year, we launched a brand new, exclusive group for women in our network that were looking for a way to engage in a more meaningful way. After all, networking is really about caring about others, and looking out for one another and finding opportunities to help elevate each other’s lives.

When I meet people, I’m always thinking about how I can help connect, elevate and celebrate the people I meet. That brings me such joy. Especially when I know that the connections I have initiated have actually helped CHANGE PEOPLES LIVES.

As a way to celebrate International Women’s Day today, Jennifer and I thought we would highlight the women in our first XWN cohort:

  • Celina Caesar-Chavannes
  • Laura Ricketts
  • Elise Hawley
  • Susanne Gagnon
  • Lori Speed
  • Denise Coughlin Babin
  • Kristi Honey
  • Linda McFarlane
  • Danielle Edwards
  • Linda Flynn
  • Brooke Pollard
  • Cathie Ellis
  • Theresa Ommert
  • Jennifer Gallienne
  • Patty Bowman Kingsley
  • Kristi Newman
  • Julia Offi
  • Ann Barker
  • Karen Anne Large
  • Pauline Thomas
  • Jennifer Jessop

Congratulations to this incredible group of women who are truly committed to supporting one another and always looking for ways to learn, connect with others, and support and elevate each other in the world.

I’d also like to welcome our newest XWN member, Jody Larmer. She has worked as a personal trainer and holistic nutritionist and consultant in Durham for the past 20 years. Jody has continued her education in self-esteem coaching to help women with their journey to feel amazing about themselves inside and out. Jody started a program a program called “Get Your Sexy Back” for women who have lost themselves for a myriad of reasons.

Does this make you think of Justin Timberlake’s song?

If any of this resonates with you, you can connect with Jody at  jodybodyboomer@gmail.com.

Last, I’d like to congratulate Janice Coupland on the launch of her brand new business, KrishLynn Designs. I had the opportunity to visit Janice’s new store in Oshawa this past week and it’s absolutely beautiful!

Digging Deep: My Five Takeaways From Celina’s Saturday Session

Digging Deep: My Five Takeaways From Celina’s Saturday Session

Thought I would take a moment to acknowledge all of the XWN members who joined us yesterday for a very special chat with Celina as part of her MaximizingU course.

It was incredibly heart-warming to spend an hour with this amazing group of women who are sharing in a very special process that is inspiring all of us to DIG DEEP.

I think for many of us, making the commitment to review the course material, do the self-inquiry work, and show up for the zoom call took many of us out of our comfort zones – and I’m happy that we did.

I don’t know about you, but the pandemic has left me feeling very alone so much of the time, and it feels so great to have such a supportive group of women to brighten my days. Thank you and congratulations Linda M, Laura R, Denise, Linda F, and Jennifer G for showing up and sharing the way you did.

Huge thanks to Celina CC, who despite her incredibly hectic book launch and media schedule, showed up looking like the ROCK STAR that she is and led us through an engaging and enlightening session. I am truly grateful.

Here are some of the highlights of the session that resonated deeply with me:

#1 – REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE

We discussed the IMPOSTER SYNDROME, and going it alone in life. This topic touched me deeply. It reminded me of a time when my dear friend Lori Speed had to sit me down and said – “Kerri, don’t you remember who you are?”

Celina shared this powerful book that she highly recommends by Kristine Barnett–The Spark. The notion of grieving our losses, and not running from pain, fear and other challenges in life. The importance of trusting our intuition, and investing in ourselves. Looking forward to doing a deeper dive into this content when we get to chapter 9.

By the way, for those of you who would still like to join us, you can still jump in. Just let us know, and we will bring you up to speed! The session link is posted in our XWN private Facebook group.

#2 – WHO ARE YOUR PEOPLE?

It is so easy to lose ourselves – especially during these ever-changing times.

Sometimes it takes our closest people (the people who wear our t-shirts in life) to be there for us in this way.  Who are the people who wear your t-shirt? The mentors, supporters who you can go to in life to for support? Who are the people that you would like to add to this list?

#3 – RESILIENCY

“Bits of our humanity are lost when we do not share our stories. When we act as if the fibres that connect every single one of us as human beings do not exist, and therefore try to hide the shame, guilt or pain that makes us who we are. That makes us more resilient.”

– Celina Caesar-Chavannes

This topic of resiliency and resilient leadership was also highlighted last week in our DWN chat with Linda Flynn last week. If you missed it, the chat is posted on our DWN CHATS podcast.

#4– STOP AND SMELL THE ROSES

When is the last time you really stopped to smell the roses in life?

Following the session, we sent Celina some roses to thank her for the session and for keeping her commitment to giving back to her own community by investing in women in her community even though she is being celebrated around the world.

It is so beautiful to see Celina shine as a best-selling author in only a few weeks of launching her new book, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

Here’s to you Celina, I hope you are able to stop and smell the roses today and celebrate your MASSIVE book launch success!

On that note, what does stopping to smell the roses mean to you?

For me, it meant just sitting quietly this morning with my coffee and observing everything around me – and just breathing life in for a precious few moments.

Seems simple, but it these quite moments truly bring you back to who you are.

#5– TRUST YOUR INTUITION

Enough said.

First XWN Cycle kicks off Feb 6!

MaximizingU with Celina Caesar-Chavannes

If you always keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle, you will never feel the full rush of the ride called life. You need to take some risks.

Because at the intersection of all your strengths and flaws, beauty and vulnerability, brilliant moments and massive screw ups, you find that which makes you, authentically you.

How do you find the real you? How do you make being unapologetically, authentic work?

Let’s take that journey together.

COURSE MODULE OUTLINE

Module 1: Butterflies & Fear – Don’t shy away and don’t let it control you. Use the fear, stress and adrenalin for good. Those butterflies in your stomach are a sign that you are about to embark on something courageous. Go for it and use that energy to get the job done.
Objective:
Tackling our fear and leveraging it for good.

Module 2:  Worth It & Deserve It – If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Asking for help can be hard especially when your pride gets in the way. However, it is only in asking that you can receive. Ask. You deserve it.
Objective: Overcome imposter syndrome and create a plan to get what you want.

Module 3: Ms. Take – Let me introduce you to the best teacher I ever had. She is your teacher too. Did you just take her gifts of guilt and shame or did you learn from her.
Objective: Learn how to deal with difficult situations, by developing the skills and strategies to avoid future pitfalls or dampen the negative impact.

Module 4: The Universe is Unfolding – Time to shift and smell the roses. Drop the plan. Remove the blinders and see the life around you. Start to live. Start to love.
Objective: Learn how to be still. Be present.

Module 5: Grateful & Expectations – To whom much is given, much is expected. Be grateful for the millions of moments that happened, since the beginning of the universe, for you to be here in this moment. Now pay those moments forward and give back.
Objective: Understand the power in gratitude and giving back.

Module 6: Hard Work & Value – Time to roll up your sleeves and not be afraid to get dirty. Living your fullest and best life is hard and may require some sacrifice in order to build resilience. Hard work is as much a mental exercise, as it is a physical one. Get your head in the game.
Objective: Strategies to build resilience, understand reality and figure out what you do best.

Module 7: Swallow your pride – Not because you like the taste of bad medicine, but because you know that you must swallow it to get better. So go ahead and take a gulp.
Objective: Strategies to create circles of influence to help you get what you need.

Module 8: Growth & Doubt – Get uncomfortable, step outside your comfort zone, stretch yourself and grow.  Undoubtedly, this growth with create doubt. Let’s learn how to make good judgements for You, Inc.
Objective: Start to cultivate your village and Board of Directors for You, Inc. You will need these people when doubt starts to creep in.

Module 9: Playful You – If Superman can take the cape off every now and again and not save the world, why can’t we? Being everything to everyone and saving the world all the time is not a sustainable way to live. In fact, it may be the most effective way to get sick. Take off the cape and relax. You do not have to win every race or conquer every mountain. Take some time to play.
Objective: Learn how to prioritize self-care.

Module 10: Go Big or Go Home – When I die, I want my headstone to read: “The only thing she had left to do was die.” Living life to the fullest requires intentional commitment to taking some risks. It also means letting go of your ego. Don’t fall into the trap. A big ego fills your head, and a full head is closed for learning.
Objective: Develop the 30 second elevator pitch for You, Inc. without the filter and facade.

Module 11: Rushing Fools – Why don’t we outsource our problems the way we outsource other challenges in our lives? Just think about it. If your toilet starts leaking, unless you are a plumber, you pick up the phone or Google a local plumber and have them come in to assist. We spend so much of our time rushing around, doing tasks we are not capable of doing. Time stop overthinking and procrastinating, and start doing. Objective: Learn how to prioritize and outsource tasks to help achieve your goals.

Module 12: Dollars & Sense – Never take the first offer. How do you know not to take the offer, if you do not know what you are worth? Let’s take some time to conduct a valuation of You, Inc.
Objective: Understanding how to place value on everything your put your time, energy, love or resource into.

Module 13: Authenticity and DEI – Does authenticity work in a world that is desperately trying to hold on to the status quo? Well, we can only find out once we stop trying to blend in, and start living out loud.
Objective: Create steps to start creating equity, and a positive environment, within your own sphere of influence.
